thimbles allow rope and wire to be looped back on itself without
creating a 'kink' in the line. This ensures that the force is applied to
the splice or swage and not to the underside of the loop, where jolting
and flexing (common for stays in any sort of choppy water) will cause
wear on an unprotected wire.
The size is the diameter of the rope that it suits. These galvanized steel thimbles are for use with steel wire rope or rope. They are inserted inside the loop to preserve the natural shape of the loop and protect the cable/rope from any damage.
